Given the amount of titles and job positions we can find, it is very easy to get completely lost with definitions. But today we're going to explain the main ones, so that you find out the responsibilities they entail.

From a while ago, the different main job positions in a company, that belong to either the C-Level o C-Suite, are defined through acronyms like CEO, CIO, CFO, etc., charges that are internationally known through those terms accross different languages.

Given the amount of names we can find, it is very easy to get completely lost with definitions, but today we're going to explain some of the main ones, as well as the responsibilities they entail.

Even though some of the job positions may seem similar, their presence depends on the company's size. SMEs might have the same person in charge of several domains that in a big company would require a whole team

Defining technicalities

  • CEO
    Chief Executive Officer. It is the most extended concept and it the defines the position of executive director, the boss, the highest job position within the company's organization chart. The CEO is the final responsible for everything that happens within a company.
  • CIO
    Chief Information Officer, or information technology director. It is a job that has become essential within organizations, since most of the improvement of IT processes depends on CIOs, and they are responsible for identifying and providing the necessary technologies for the company's processes to work as best as possible.
  • CSO
    Chief Security Officer, the person responsible for the company's corporative security. In small companies, it is common for the CSO and the CISO to be the same person, but in big corporations their roles are clearly differentiated, the CSO is the one who requires a broader business overview as well as understanding the mission and the company's goals, setting in motion business continuity plans, etc.
  • CISO
    Chief Information Security Officer, is the one in charge of the organization's information and data security. Currently, this position is more important than it was before, since network security is a common concern nowadays for companies, regardless of their size or market.
  • CTO
    Chief Technology Officer, takes a similar role as that of the CIO but with a more technical profile. Usually, that person is responsible for the engineering team, as well as the one in charge of implementing the technical strategy to improve the final product. It is also pretty usual for the CTO and the CIO to be the same person in some companies.
  • COO
    Chief Operating Officer. That position entails supervising how the company's product distribution and creation system works and making sure everything is fine and working properly.
  • CMO
    Chief Marketing Officer is the one responsible for the Marketing department, which covers sales management, product development, advertising, market studies and customer service. Its main goal is to keep good relationships with clients regarding external communication, as well as with the rest of the company's departments regarding internal communication.
  • CFO
    Chief Financial Officer. In charge of the organization's finacial and economic planning. Investment, financing and risks to increase the business' value depend on this position.
  • CDO
    Chief Digital Officer is more or less the digital director of a company; a key job for adapting the company to the current changes. Its tasks include analyzing, evaluating and implementing everything regarding the organization's model. This position is kind of something in between the department managers and the CEO.
  • CXO
    Chief Customer Experience Officer, is the one charged with bringing together customers and the company. This means it is a profile that must guarantee the good user experience of clients.
  • CCO
    Chief Communications Officer is the one that takes care of the corporative reputation. The company's relationship with different media depends on this role. Its job is relevant for the brand to become visible and to highlight positive messages.
  • CRO
    Chief Revenue Officer is the one that backs up any activity that generates profit for the organization. This means it turns indeed into a combination of marketing and sales duties with software, so it is also very related to customers. The sales flow must be managed and it is also necessary to make sure that the company has the staff they need for increasing term numbers.
  • CGO
    Chief Growth Officer is a professional that could be described as multidisciplinary, a profile that carries out functions devoted to business, sales, marketing and IT development. It is a profile that knows the Chief Marketing Officer duties but it is also expert in sales, finance, product development and customer service.
