There is a detail from the 2026 World Cup that is going almost unnoticed amid the goals and refereeing controversies, yet it has changed the way every match is played.
The official match ball: a technological breakthrough
The Adidas TRIONDA contains a microchip developed in collaboration with the technology company Kinexon: a 500 Hz IMU motion sensor integrated into a specially designed layer within one of its four panels. It is suspended at the ball’s geometric center using elastic supports, designed to avoid affecting either its weight or aerodynamic behaviour. And since the chip would otherwise unbalance the ball’s flight, counterweights have been strategically placed across the other three panels to compensate.

The result is that the ball transmits data 500 times per second to antennas installed around the stadium, making it possible to identify the exact moment a player makes contact with the ball.
Position, speed, rotation, contact. In real time. With zero margin for error.
Before each match, the balls are placed on wireless induction charging bases, just like a modern smartphone charger. Each game uses approximately 20 official balls, all properly charged and synchronized. If one fails, another is immediately brought in—like a production server system with built-in redundancy.
This didn’t come out of nowhere. In Russia 2018, the Telstar 18 was the first World Cup ball to feature a chip, although it only used NFC technology to let fans unlock content with their phones—nothing related to refereeing decisions. Four World Cups later, the same object is now rolling across the pitch while transmitting critical infrastructure data in real time.
And that’s just the ball.
Football has become technological infrastructure
What FIFA has deployed across the 16 stadiums of the 2026 World Cup is not supporting technology—it is core infrastructure. The ecosystem is called Football AI, backed by a $375 million investment and developed in partnership with Lenovo. It integrates IoT sensors in the ball, 16 optical tracking cameras per stadium, 3D models of all 1,248 participating players, and a generative AI assistant that the 48 national coaches can query in natural language.
VAR decisions are now made using data processed in milliseconds. Servers are physically installed inside the stadiums to eliminate latency. If there is even a millisecond of delay, the play cannot be validated in real time.
That is no longer football sprinkled with technology. It is critical infrastructure with a football match on top.
The controversy nobody is talking about
Everyone is discussing VAR: whether it is fair, whether it removes excitement, whether referees are becoming obsolete.
But there is a far more interesting debate being left aside: the gap is no longer about budget, it is about analytical capability.
All 48 national teams have access to Football AI Pro. In theory, they are on equal footing. In practice, having the tool is not the same as knowing how to use it. Teams with more sophisticated technical structures will extract ten times more value from the same data than teams without analysts trained to interpret it.
Technology does not level the playing field. It amplifies it.
